sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth
has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

 You have picked up old information from August 2003 that is circulating by anonymous e-mails as it does every summer. Mars was at its closest to Earth that it has been in 60,000 years on 27 August 2003 and reached its maximum brightness of magnitude -2.9 as it did so.

However Venus is always brighter than Mars, and varies between -3.8 and - 4.6 depending on its position in its orbit. Venus at its closest to us is also much closer to Earth than Mars ever gets

So it is not true that Mars was the brightest planet when at peak brightness and it won't be true that Mars will be the brightest planet when it is next at its closest point in 26 months on December 24 2007.

A further close approach took place in October 2005 and there will be another one this coming December 2007. These close approaches are always approximately 26 months apart. However, Mars was at perihelion (its closest to the Sun) in 2003 but is at aphelion (its farthest from the Sun) this Christmas.

As a result the peak brightness on this occasion will be no more than - 1.6 and it is only brighter than -1.5 (and thus brighter than Sirus) for about 3 weeks: nothing like as spectacular from the point of view of being able to observe Mars with a telescope.

So please don't believe everything that anonymous e-mail correspondents send out and plops into your inbox. People who speak the truth generally are upfront about who they are and why they are sending out what they send. The anonymity in which these Mars messages are cloaked should be arousing your suspicions about their veracity, surely?
